The Dull Bits

The Gold at the Top of the Tree

All the animals were excited,
Today was competition day,
Whoever won the gold at the top of the tree,
Won it and could take it away.

Nick the Rhino said “I’m the strongest so the winner has to be me!”
He charged at the tree but got his horn stuck and the gold never budged on the tree.

Norris the Giraffe said “I’m the tallest so the winner has to be me!”
He stretched his neck but it wasn’t long enough to reach the gold on the tree.

Nelson the Elephant said “I’m the biggest so the winner has to be me!”
He shook the tree with his long trunk but the gold never moved on the tree.

Every animal had a go but failed,
They were all too short, fat or weak,
Just as the competition was about to close,
They heard the quietest little squeak.

A little mouse stepped forwards
“May I have a go?” They heard him ask
All of the animals laughed at him,
But he ignored them and got to the task.

Carefully he nibbled the bottom of the tree,
It tipped sideways and fell more and more,
All of a sudden it toppled over and the Gold fell into the mouse’s paw!

All the animals were silent and couldn’t believe their eyes,
The mouse happily scuttled away,
Still clutching his gold prize.
